Mustapha Boujemaoui was born in 1952 in Ahfir, in the province of Oujda.
From 1969 to 1972, he studied at the National Institute of Fine Arts in Tetouan, before joining the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels and completing his artistic training at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Returning to Morocco in 1982, Mustapha Boujemaoui taught visual arts at a high school in Oujda, then, in 1988, at the Institut Supérieur des Arts Dramatiques in Rabat, at the Centre Pédagogique Régional in Rabat and at the National School of Architecture in Rabat.
As a painter-researcher, Boujemaoui is one of the few painters in Morocco to have succeeded in making the transition from painting to installation. He began by taking an interest in the themes of travel, displacement, and the passage of time, before multiplying the supports of his art and the materials he questions. Two concepts underlie his work: transparency and repetition.
In 1995 he was awarded by the UNESCO prize for the promotion of the arts.
His works have been included in renowned collections including the Ministry of Culture (Morocco), the ONA Foundation (Morocco), the Caisse de Dépôt et de Gestion (Morocco), the Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Morocco).
Mustapha Boujemaoui lives and works in Rabat.
