Mohamed El baz was born in 1967 in Ksiba, Morocco.

A graduate of the École régionale d’art de Dunkerque in 1989 and the École nationale supérieure d’arts de Paris-Cergy in 1992, he also studied at the Institut des hautes études en arts plastiques in Paris.

His practice, which combined installation, photomontage, performance and sculpture, was built around a reflection on the contemporary world and its contradictions. Mohamed El baz associated everyday elements with cosmic or transcendent references, creating assemblages in which the trivial and the universal converged. He assigned to his work the mission of “repairing the incurable”, a phrase borrowed from the philosopher Emil Cioran, pursuing through each work an inquiry into the fragility of the contemporary world and its possibilities of resistance.

His works were exhibited in Morocco and internationally and are held in several public andprivate collections, including the Museum of African Contemporary Art Al Maaden (Morocco), the FRAC Corse (France), the Lille Museum of Modern Art (France), the Musée Léon Dierx (La Réunion) and the Ministry of Finance (Morocco).

Mohamed El baz passed away in 2024 in Marrakech.
