Born in Meknes in 1980, Narjiss Eljoubari graduated from the National Institute of Fine Arts in Tetouan in 2001. Her paintings reveal an artistic temperament drawn to materiality, with little inclination to seduce through colour.
Narjiss Eljoubari presents a series of works centred on a single motif: the umbrella. Such an approach is sufficiently rare among Moroccan artists to warrant attention in the work of a young artist. The motif appears in different guises, reduced to its essential form, without colour or ornament. It is simply there, gradually becoming one with the painting and merging into its material substance.
An admirer of Goya, Narjiss Eljoubari works in small formats, which she then brings together to create the sense of a single work. The power of her practice lies in its multiple centres of energy.
In her recent paintings, Narjiss Eljoubari favours the chance effects of her materials. As she often says: “Painting is stronger than the artist. One need only listen to the material to discover unsuspected possibilities.”
The artist lives and works in Casablanca.
