Hicham Benohoud developed the series The Classroom between 1994 and 2002 while teaching art at a middle school in Marrakech. Working within the classroom itself, he invited his students to take part in carefully staged situations that subtly disrupted the routines and authority of the school environment.

Using only materials found in the classroom, the artist constructed poetic and often unsettling scenes in which bodies, objects, and space interact. The photographs document these performative interventions, transforming the ordinary classroom into a space of imagination, tension, and quiet resistance.

Today, The Classroom is widely regarded as one of the most significant photographic series produced in Morocco at the end of the twentieth century.
