Entitled “Lignes sans brides” (“Unbridled Lines”), this exhibition marks a milestone by focusing on a form of artistic expression rarely exhibited in Morocco: drawing. Yet drawing has long held a strong appeal for Moroccan artists, as demonstrated by the eighteen participants in the exhibition.
A substantial part of the work of the pioneers of modern painting in Morocco, including Farid Belkahia, André Elbaz and Saad Ben Cheffaj, is inseparable from drawing. It also occupies an essential place in the artistic practice of second-generation painters such as Abdelkébir Rabi’, Fouad Bellamine, Houssein Miloudi and Mustapha Boujemaoui. Third-generation painters Mahi Binebine, Yamou and Mohamed Mourabiti have likewise maintained an interest in drawing.
Finally, contemporary artists and younger painters are opening up new expressive possibilities for the medium, as illustrated by the works of Hicham Benohoud, Mohamed El Baz, Safaa Erruas, Chourouk Hriech, Majida Khattari, Zakaria Ramhani, Ilias Selfati and Younès Khourassani.
